1. Can you tell us what your company is all about?

We actually started Hawthorn to try and offer a solution to a problem we found ourselves when we started a clothing brand. As is the case with most startups, we had a very small budget and we couldn’t find a manufacturer who could offer the low minimum order quantities we needed to be able to get a good range of products that were also custom. We went through a number of manufacturers before realizing that what we wanted wasn’t a service that was being offered by anyone, so we went back to the drawing board and made a plan to start our own manufacturing facility. We started small of course, but as we expanded our capabilities, our business grew. Fast-forwarding to today, we work with over 250 brands.

2. Why is The United Kingdom a good place to manufacture apparel?

The UK has been one of the fashion capitals of the world for centuries. London has been one of the global fashion cities in the world, where styles and fabrics from across the world mixed and became something new. Today, UK manufacturers work with all materials, create new materials, and work with the newest technology and machinery in the world. The UK is also committed to ethical and sustainable codes, constantly working to lessen the effects of the fashion industry on the environment.

3. What advice would you give new designers and start-up brands?

To new designers and brands, I advise you first to find what products you want to produce, have a reasonable budget, and listen to any advice the manufacturer has to give. For us, sustainability is key. We ask brands not to discount sustainability as something only for luxury brands and designers. We make sustainability and eco-friendliness affordable, and this is a long term investment to better our world.
